Insects in Hawaii:
Mosquitos- none in Waikiki, the only mosquito bites I got was at the Moana falls. It was raining the whole time I was on the trail up. It would be good to use some repellent. I had this stick, but not this day with me. I wasn’t bitten too much so stick would suffice.
I had seen cockroaches 3 times.
What to see in Hawaii:
If I had to pick 1 must see spot on Oahu, I would pick Hoomaluchia Botanical Garden. If I could pick 3 things I would add Kualoa Ranch, where they filmed 50 first dates and Stairway to Heaven.
Hawaii sightseeing tips:
- if you are going by yourself make use of couch-surfing app to meet people to go on trips together and share uber cost.
- Stay in different areas during your stay: Waikiki, Kailua, North Shore. It is all worth 2-3 nights as you have different beaches, hikes and sites nearby
- Rent Biki and drive around Waikiki.

Is it possible to do Hawaii on a budget:
Yes it is, there are couchsurfers who can offer a place to stay. There are cheap accommodations, but make sure you book it at least 2 months in advance, as on the spot you won’t find a couch in the living room for less then $80. I was able to find a 1bd apartment on Airbnb for $45, 4min walk from Waikiki Beach.
